Cables & adapters

Hardware that has successfully loaded programs from an iPhone with USB-C to a Timex Sinclair 1000. Use cables you already own where suitable; no extra stereo extension is required for this setup.

Apple USB-C to 3.5 mm headphone adapter — for an iPhone with USB-C. Find on Amazon ↗
Older Lightning iPhone? Apple's Lightning to 3.5 mm adapter is an alternative, NOT TESTED with the Sinclair. Find Lightning adapter on Amazon ↗
KINGTOP 3.5 mm CTIA headset splitter (TRRS male → separate headphones + microphone jacks) — connect playback to the headphones jack. Its microphone jack is reserved for later experimentation; it is not a stereo-to-mono signal converter or electrical isolator. Find on Amazon ↗
Bolvek 3 ft 3.5 mm TS mono male-to-male cables (2-pack) — use one cable from the splitter's headphones jack to the Sinclair's EAR socket. Keep the second as a spare; Sinclair-to-phone recording has NOT been tested and may require additional interface/protection. Find 2-pack on Amazon ↗

Load a tape

Connect phone → Apple USB-C adapter → KINGTOP splitter → headphones jack → one Bolvek mono cable → Sinclair EAR. For an older iPhone, the Lightning adapter is unverified. Do not connect the splitter microphone jack to Sinclair MIC; recording circuitry has not been verified.
Unmute your phone, keep it awake, and begin at a moderate output level. Increase carefully only as needed for reliable loading. Do not wear headphones when playing tape audio at loading volume. iOS headphone safety settings may change the output level.
On the Timex Sinclair 1000, enter LOAD "", then press NEWLINE.
Press PLAY ▶ here and allow the complete WAV and program startup to finish. A blank screen during a long cassette load does not necessarily mean failure.
If the program loads but doesn't run, enter RUN.
